The program Sheep on the radio is one of the programs of the picture book festival Sheep in the Box, held regularly in Pazin. The guests are librarian and picture book author Davorka Semenić Premec, owner of Ibis grafika publishing house Saša Krnic and illustrators Vanda Čižmek and Peter Škerl, who will reveal their role in the making of a picture book.

“… Vanda Čižmek uses highly individualized handwriting that adjusts to the readers’ age and the requirements of the commission, nevertheless managing to remain clearly her own. From the illustrations with many colors and well-defined facial expressions mixed with an impression of cuteness for the youngest readers, through black and white illustrations with sporadically applied colors to accentuate the particular motive, all the way to the precisely cleared up compositions with a lot of empty space, i.e. whiteness in the books for older kids and adults.”

Artistic intervention in Zagreb’s hospitals

Under the guidance of the project author dr. art. Melinda Šefčić 12 artistic interventions have been done at Zagreb Clinical Centre: in University Hospital Centre Zagreb, at the Clinic for Women’s Diseases and Childbirth, and at the Children’s Hospital Zagreb. The following artists have taken part in the project: Ivana Pipal, Jasmina Krajačić, Vanda Čižmek, Marta Tuta, Olena Sokolovska, Vida Meić, Ivo Kosanović, Agata Lučić, Ida Jakovljević, Ivan Stanišić i Melinda Šefčić.

The contest Image of the Book – Annual Contest for Book Illustration and Design was founded by the Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications together with the Association of Book Illustrators and Designers of Moscow in 2008. In 2017 it became International.

The best illustration award in category Illustration of the Book at the internationa festival of illustration ILUSTROFEST

At the opening ceremony of Ilustrofest the awards for the best illustrators were given to: Vanda Čižmek (Croatia) for the best illustration in the category Book Illustration; to Monika Lang (Serbia) for the best illustration in the category Illustration in the Media; to Jovana Mugoša (Czech Republic) for the best illustration in the category Illustration in Design; to Anđela Janković (Serbia) and to Stefan Grković (Serbia) for the best illustration in the category of Personal and Socially Engaged Projects. Winner of the Grand Prix of the festival as the best illustrator in this year’s selection is Srđa Dragović (Montenegro) for the overall artistic work.

Award Grigor Vitez for younger children’s illustration in 2018 goes to Vanda Čižmek for the picture book Catch the Blue Bear for Me (Ibis grafika, Zagreb, 2018)

“… Artistic expression of Vanda Čižmek is characterized by the clear stylization of the characters, forms and the spaces. The illustrator forms in her simple way special and striking character of the plain space in which the story takes place. Geometrical space produces the background on which emotions of the main character pop-up. The whole impression reminds to the contemporary reinterpretation of some elements of the artistic expression that could have its origin in the respect for the tradition of the Zagreb School of Animated Films…”

The Year of Reading ULUPUH marked with an interesting project of dressing contemporary Croatian literary works in the new robe. Contributing to the project Picture and Word members of ULUPUH with their costumes and illustrations have given new flavour to some contemporary stories and characters. In this virtual Year of Reading, we invite you to see and hear a unique combination of arts.

Travelling collective exhibition Fearless women is based on the books Stories About the Fearless Croatain Women (2019) by Tatjana Barat and Icons: Fearless Women Who Changed Croatia (2020) by Rosie Kugli, published by Iris Illyrica publisher under editorship of Ivana Glavaš Bakija. The exhibition includes altogether 100 illustrations of the important females from Croatian past and present, produced by 23 Croatian female illustrators. It is literary and artistic story in one, with an accent on educational character of the project as a whole.

In order to make the stay in new environment less stressful for the kids who escaped from war, Croatian illustrators organized an interesting action. At the initiative of Ana Salopek they decided to prepare a personal gift from one illustrator for every child, in which the illustrator will try to convey the message that they will build together the world in which it is worthy to live. Picture books, books and the small packages are prepared for children accommodated in the Lichko-Senyska county.
